New Education Policy 2020

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the new New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) and renamed the HRD Ministry as Education Ministry.

NEP 2020 has been the break-down of the existing 10+2 structure and introduction of the 5+3+3+4 structure of School Education.

NEP 2020 offers the students the option of choosing a 1 year Diploma, a 3 year bachelors degree or a 4 year bacherlors’ degree with research across disciplines.

For doctorate, the students who have completed their master’s would be eligible for pursuing Ph.D. The M. Phil programme would be discontinued, as proposed by the NEP.

The three languages learned by children will be the choices of States, regions, and of the students, so long as at least two of the three languages are native to India.

All students will be allowed to take Board Exams on up to two occasions during any given school year, one main examination and one for improvement, if desired, as per the NEP.

Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardised across the country.

The undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4-year duration, with multiple exit options, as informed by the Education Ministry. After completing one year, a student will get a certificate in a discipline or field including vocational and professional areas, a diploma if a student leaves after 2 years of study, or a Bachelor’s degree after a 3-year program. The 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor’s program, however, shall be the preferred option and will give degree with research if a student has pursued a project along with it.
